Quilting Ministry

Quilting Ministry

The Quilt Ministry at Our Saviour Lutheran Church began in 2007. Since that time our Ministry has completed over 2000 Quilts for Lutheran World Relief committed to helping people in need around the world and sharing God’s love. Throughout the process we work as a team, collectively and individually accomplishing tasks which come together resulting in the beautiful gift of Quilts.

About Our Schedule

Work sessions are held January-September on the 2nd Saturday (9am-noon) and the following Tuesday (12:30-3pm) of each month. Each year culminates with the Blessing of the Quilts at the end of September.

Sewing is not a required skill for the Quilt Ministry

There are several non-sewing steps to making a Quilt many of which can be done at home and/or at work sessions:

  • sorting fabric
  • cutting fabric into 11” squares
  • ironing fabric
  • pinning fabric
  • packaging squares
  • tying squares.

But if you do sew…

  • Quilt tops consist of 48 11”x 11” squares.   Packages of pre-cut squares (48 squares) are available and need to be sewn together to form the Quilt tops.
  • Once the completed tops, batting and backing are pinned together and the squares tied, the Quilt perimeter needs to be sewn together with a zig-zag stitch.
  • Sewing can be done at home or during our work sessions.

Seeking Donations of Fabric, Thread & Embroidery Thread

Year round we actively seek fabric, primarily cottons, in quantities that allow us to cut multiple 11” x11” squares. (Fabric should not include religious symbols, printed words, nor patriotic/military references that may be misinterpreted and endanger the people we assist or jeopardize delivery to people who would receive the Quilts). We also welcome donations of thread and embroidery floss, all colors.
